CHAMPIONS

Haringey Borough today drew with Wealdstone 2-2 at Broadfields Sports Ground to win the League Championship!

Record: 13 Wins - 2 Draws - 0 Defeats

Congratulations to the whole team, managment and supporters!
Match Report
Haringey Borough U16s won the Harrow Youth League title on Sunday with a 2-2 draw against title rivals Wealdstone. In what is their first season together the team secured the championship with a superb record of thirteen wins, two draws and no defeats.

Haringey went into the game knowing that a draw would be enough; Wealdstone likewise knew that they had to win to stand any chance of clawing back the ten point gap. After 15 minutes the Stones took the lead after some sloppy defensive play, however as the first half went on Haringey started to dominate and deservedly equalized through a sharp turn and finish in the six yard box from Kieren Smith.

In the second half Haringey picked up where they left off and, after missing a host of clear chances, took the lead for the first time in the match again through Smith, this time powering clear of the defenders before slotting through the Wealdstone keepers’ legs. Although Haringey were in control, the battling Wealdstone team managed to equalize against the run of play with ten minutes remaining to set up a tense finish. In this period both sides had chances to win the game and, although an amazing 6 minutes of injury time were added by the referee, Haringey achieved the necessary result.

Haringey Borough are also in the League Cup Semi final with a home tie against London Tigers and the possibility of a league and cup double still very much alive.

Boris Bonket Profile

The 8th Player Profile is now here...

Name: Boris Bonket
DOB: 22th October 1990
Position: Versatile
Description: Strong All-rounder

Boris has been an integral part of the Haringey Borough side this season, whether it be at center back, midfield or up front. He brings a physical presence to the side as well as being a super player. Although saying this, Bonket certainly has the potential to get even better, with a lack of concentration sometimes apparent. If he works hard and keeps up his brilliant attendance record at training Boris will no doubt have a bright future in football.

Haringey Edge Towards Title

Haringey Borough U16s moved a step closer to the Harrow Youth League Division 1 Title on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over North Greenford United B. Just one more win is needed to clinch the championship in what is their first season together.

The game started off in the sunshine; however wind and hailstones were to follow before the final whistle. Stefano Fontanini made his comeback from injury and Hayes moved up front to replace the injured Smee. The pitch was in good condition and Haringey used this to dominate from start to finish in an excellent display of quality and organization. The first goal was a well orchestrated move resulting in some neat footwork and an assured finish from in-form Kieren Smith.

At half time Boro were in control and the second half followed the same pattern, all be it with some severe weather for about a 25 minute spell. In this time Kieren Smith had 2 good penalty appeals, the first was given outside the box, whereas there was no doubt about the second one where Smith had his leg taken away from him as he lined up a shot. Another player who is on the top of his game, Gustavo Angel, stepped up to coolly slot the ball home. Although still in control a failure to take some very good chances led to North Greenford scoring with 7 minutes remaining on the counter attack. This made things a little edgy, however the Greens saw out time to take their league record to 13 wins, 1 draw and no defeats.

Battling Boro Beat Bessingby

Haringey Borough faced Bessingby Park Rangers at their Northolt High School ground in a ‘double header’ to ease fixture congestion. This meant two shorter games of 30 minutes each way; the second match starting 15 minutes after the first had finished. Although not an ideal scenario, it gave Haringey Borough the opportunity to pick up 6 points in there pursuit of the title.

The first match however started poorly for Boro as they went in 1-0 down at half time. This caused them to change from a rigid 4-4-2 to an attacking 3-4-3 with a reshuffle in player positions but no substitutions. This provoked an immediate response as within minutes of the restart the scores were level through Kieren Smith. With the Greens on the ascendancy the game looked to have turned, however a failure to put chances away and another moment of sloppy defending allowed Bessingby to regain the lead with their first real attack of the half. Things looked bleak, especially with only 20 minutes left and the match turning into a very scrappy affair. However, as has been the case all season, Haringey never gave up and started to turn the screw. Jack Vickerstaff was thrown on for Espana, and straight away slotted home the equalizer. With 10 minutes left the whole team realized they could still go on to win the game and started to press for the all important goal. It came with just 4 minutes left when a cross from the right hand side was headed home by the impressive Boris Bonket. Wills and Vasconcellos took the field replacing Smee and Hayes to help Boro see out time.

The second match of the ‘double header’ saw Haringey take the lead on just 17 seconds, with battling midfielder Luke Williams-Dinning charging through from center and shooting through the arms of the opposing keeper. This was the platform for an excellent display, although Bessingby did draw level at 1-1 before Boro made it safe with strikes from Bonket, Smith and Wills. All three were excellent goals including a long range effort from Vinny Wills. At 4-1 Haringey never looked in danger and should have added a 5th. With 7 minutes left Bessingby did find a lifeline to bring the score to 4-2. Immediately they looked to make it 4-3, however keeper Costas Phouphoullides made what could be the ‘save of the season’ to pluck the ball out of the top corner and round the post.

Over the 2 games Haringey showed their quality, desire and potential. The first 30 minutes were quite poor, but from then on they battled, worked for each other, kept going to the end and produced the goods. These 6 points are massive and the way in which they were won, specifically in the first game, is a testament to the squad.

Boro Progress to League Cup Semi

Haringey Borough scored in the 3rd of 6 injury time minutes to beat St Joseph's 3-2 and secure a semi-final with London Tigers. At the start of play Haringey were without Wickham, Smee, Phinn-Archer, Fontanini and Bonket. However the players who came in put in a good display and the game should really have been more comfortable then it actually turned out.

Boro went 1-0 up when Espana hit a cracker onto the underside of the crossbar and into the goal from 20 yards; the ball did then bounce back out where Smith tucked away the rebound to make sure, however Espana will claim it. St Joseph's then equalised against the run of play with a solitary attack. A lovely move was then finished with a neat header by Christodoulou for the Greens to retake the lead. Again Haringey were pegged back against the run of play, leaving a tense last 20 minutes. Boro looked fitter and stronger, however St Joseph's had 1 or 2 chances to snatch it at the end. But deep into injury time Haringey scored a deserved goal through a deflected shot from Smith, his first goal for the club, to avoid extra time and win the tie.

Team: Phouphoullides, Shiekh, Vasconcellos (Bonket 80th), Martin, Angel, Espana, Christodoulou, Williams-Dinning, Vickerstaff (Sa'Adu 60th), Hayes, Smith (Wills 80th)

Haringey U16s face an early kick off this coming weekend with a 10:30am kick off in an important league fixture.
